What is the planetary nebula?
The planetary nebula is a ring shaped nebula that is formed by expanding shell of gas around an aging star. Many say that 95% of all stars will become planetary nebula including the sun. While the other 5% end their life as a supernova because their mass is so heavy.

How is it formed?
The planetary nebula is formed when the red giant stars get rid of their out layers as clouds of gas. Gravity forces the core which is almost pure helium to shrink and compress and become even hotter than before. Due to the high temperature in the red giant will eventually ignite helium ashes. The ashes will fuse together to make the planetary nebula.
